As soon as I learned that raku ceramics exist, I wanted to combine it with Baltic amber. For whatever reason I felt really drawn to this combo - it just glows... Given how ornamental my jewellery usually is, it was quite challenging and humbling - I felt that everything was already there, nothing else was needed, and I loved how "accidental" and beyond my control it was. Felt weird not to do "much" - raku just happens in a fiery chaos and the amber - Mother Nature does this part. I just combined the two elements is sterling silver setings, joined together.
I submitted this piece for this 2019 Amberif and it wasn't successful, but I am still so glad I made it - somehow it was the right piece of a puzzle for me at this particular moment. And it smells so nice - just a faint scent of smoke, from the raku firing. I got this raku piece from Edi Malcer (thank you!). I guess I actually like this piece so much (I DO), because it is a parable for me, about how beauty is not always something you actually work really hard to create, but it might be, as well, something that you simply notice and appreciate and it has nothing to do with you.
Silver, raku ceramics, Baltic amber.
